Advice on Scuba Diving in Dahab, Egypt

Dahab diving, in the Gulf of Aqaba, boasts some of the best dive sites in Egypt. This deep and narrow gulf is located at the northern tip of the Red Sea and also borders Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Diving in Dahab is an astonishing mix of nomadic desert feel and spectacular dive sites. Though only a short hop away from Europe, the laidback atmosphere and warmth of the people in Dahab instantly make you feel like you are far from modern civilization. Combining diving in Dahab with overnight camel safaris and camping in a nomadic village is a rare opportunity to experience the best of the local culture and dive sites. 

Dahab dive sites are accessible from the shore by jeep. Some sites require a bit of a rocky walk or climb to get to the entry point. The reef structures are superb, creating walls, caves, canyons and coral gardens, something for every level diver. Since the reef covers the entire shore in Dahab, you can dive any place where you can enter the water. The Bay of Dahab itself makes for excellent training dives or night dives, and are popular for critter hunting.

The desert climate of Dahab allows for year-round diving. Air temperatures vary between 18 degrees Celsius in winter (November to February) to over 40 in summer (June to August). Water temperatures are comfortable all through the year, ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius in winter and summer respectively, and are warmest in September. The visibility can be quite impressive, depending on the conditions, from 10 meters up to 50 meters. 

Traveling to Dahab is easiest from Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, from where it is only a short one-hour bus drive to Dahab. Buses run back and forth over 10 times a day. From Hurghada International Airport the bus ride takes 2.5 hours, but buses don’t run as frequently. 

Dive sites in Dahab are reached by jeep (or camel) and mostly consist of shore dives. There are a good variety of types of dive sites, including coral gardens, walls, canyons and muck dives. Although some dive sites have a worldwide reputation amongst divers, it is worth it to explore lesser-known dive sites as well, to get away from the crowds. Plenty of marine life can be seen around the reefs of Dahab, like colorful reef fish, barracudas, jacks, turtles and blue-spotted stingrays. 

Bells and the Blue Hole are officially two dive sites, but due to their proximity to one another they are often combined in one dive. This is by far the most famous dive in Dahab. Divers enter the water at Bells, through a five-meter wide bell-shaped chimney (hence the name) and descend to 27 meters deep where they enter the open ocean. From this point, a spectacular wall runs all the way to the Blue hole, where divers exit over the reef saddle in shallow waters. An arch is located at 52 meters deep, connecting the Blue Hole and the open ocean. Divers should not attempt to swim through this tunnel unless properly trained and equipped for a deep dive. 

The Canyon is another spectacular and famous Dahab dive site. A cleft in the sloping ocean floor, the canyon can be entered and exited at different points. The unusual feeling of swimming in an underwater canyon, with steep reef walls on either side and the crack often getting narrower above you, is what makes this site a must do when diving in Dahab.

Venturing out by camel to the protected marine park of Ras Abu Galum is rewarded with stunning, untouched coral reefs and uncrowded dives. Because this site cannot be reached by car, it is often done as a day trip camel safari, during which divers get to enjoy scenery, diving and delicious Bedouin cuisine in one of the little restaurants. Towards the north of the park, coral gardens with table corals, crocodile fish, turtles, and lionfish are excellent for beginner divers or a shallower second dive of the day. To the southern side of the park, divers will find drop-offs and pinnacles, with larger fish swimming out in the blue. Tech divers will find this area a joy to explore with its moon-like landscape in the depths of the waters.
