Desmophyllum dianthus, a solitary cold water coral, thriving - among others - in the waters of the Chilean fjord region. Although these azoxanthellate corals are considered particularly sensitive to ocean acidification, their response to natural variations in pH are largerly unknown due to the difficulty of studying their ecology in deep waters. I took this photo during a field trip to the fjord Comau in spring 2015 where we conducted a cross-transplantation experiment along the natural horizontal pH gradient of this fjord.
