Top 5 Attractions and Sights in Munich

Every tourist from far and wide wants to get a piece of Munich. Well, I’ve been lucky to have had my share of the enchanting Bavarian capital a couple of times. When I planned for the city break which eventually turned into a holiday (it had to), I almost lost the deal on cheap flights to Munich, as I could sense huge rush among tourists like me grabbing their deals saving them pounds. I could not have let go. So I acted when the time seemed right and there I went.

No trip to the fascinating Bavarian capital is complete without exploring these top 5 attractions and sights - many of them are located in the Old Town of Munich. You can easily walk from one landmark to another.

1.Marienplatz - Marien Square and the New Town Hall of Munich

Visiting Marienplatz is a must for any traveler. Recognised as the central square in the heart of Munich, go on exploring several old and incredible buildings, landmarks and churches. Inside Marienplatz you will find Mariensäule, the Marian column topped with the golden statue of Virgin Mary. Also, it is the home to the Old and New Town Hall of the city.

The tower of the New Town Hall houses the Glockenspiel, a stunning carillon that’s more than a century old. Visit here at 11AM or noon to hear the Glockenspiel chime. It sounds absolutely soothing.

2.Frauenkirche - Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady

Head to the Catholic Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady, Munich’s landmark and regarded as the largest church in Munich. With a seating capacity for up to 20,000 people, the striking twin towers of the Cathedral give an edge to the city’s skyline.

In fact, you can reach the top by climbing the stairs of the towers for the view that will simply take your breath away.

3.Dachau Concentration Camp

The Dachau Concentration Camp was one of the first concentration camps in Nazi Germany opened in 1933. Here at this camp you will see the original prisoner baths, courtyards, barracks and the crematorium as well. Location in southern Germany, Dachau began housing political prisoners initially, but eventually it evolved into a death camp where thousands of Jews died from malnutrition.

4.Viktualienmarkt - The Victuals Market

Just a few steps away from the Marienplatz is the Viktualienmarkt, which is the daily outdoors farmers market in Munich. Take a walk past the 140 multi-coloured booths and cherish the unique flavour of this excellent market that’s been boasting of its fresh food as well as regional.

The Viktualienmarkt, which dates back to the early 19th century, offers honey, flowers, spices, eggs, cheese and several other items.

5.Residence Palace of Munich

Do visit the former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs, the Residence. This royal palace is now home to one of the finest Europeam museums of interior decoration. The palace’s buildings were constructed way back in the late 14th century. The museum displays 130 rooms with antique art, porcelain, furniture etc.

Germany’s third largest city will keep you busy and entertained throughout your tour, and you surely would come back for more. Munich, is one of those cities which seems torn from a fairy tale. Compare and book cheap flights to Munich for an unforgettable tour in Munich covering the best attractions and sights there are.

The magnificent castles will make you step back in time as if they have really been ripped from tales that seemed so charming. Renowned for its architecture, culture and the annual “Oktoberfest” beer celebration, no eager tourist willing to capture the best of this German town would not even think about not including this destination in their bucket list.
