East Carib Dive is a small, independently owned Dive Center located on the tropical Nature Island of Dominica (Doe-mi-nee-KA). Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic to the northwest, our Dominica is situated at the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, lying between the two French islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. The island is 29 miles long and 16 miles wide.
Volcanic in origin and ruggedly beautiful, it's towering green mountains covered with dense forests, deep valleys and countless streams provide magnificent scenic views.
Dominica is the youngest of the Caribbean islands. Created about 26 million years ago by violent, volcanic activity, the terrain is rugged, lush and verdant. Even though 26 million years seems like a long time, it isn't in geological time, giving Dominica a unequaled Caribbean landscape. There hasn't been enough time for erosion and wind forces to level off the land.
The tallest mountain on Dominica, rises almost 5,000 feet (1,500 m) and the plunge off the sea shelf on the southwest corner at Scott's Head is almost 6,000 feet (1,800 m) deep.
The underwater topography of Dominica mimics the rugged landscape above, with it's canyons and cliffs plunging into the depths. Massive underwater boulder fields and craters accompany steep walls and pinnacles to provide some of the most breathtaking diving to be found anywhere.
Unlike most coral reefs, Dominica's reefs are formed on solid geological masses. Boulders and sheer granite faces provide a solid foundation for unparalleled sponge, hard coral and gorgarian growth.
