On March 3rd 2015, something magical happened.... I saw my very first whaleshark. This event in itself is pretty incredible, but it meant so much more to me.
It took 15 months of diving on Koh Tao nearly every day... there have been sightings, sure, but they always happened on the one day I would take off, or it showed up an hour after I left a dive site etc. I had a lot of bad luck. But finally... *500* dives later, it happened.
When I saw a large dark shape emerging out of the blue, I just knew. My heart started racing... and as it swam right over my head at an arm's reach away, my eyes welled with tears. Finally! I screamed with glee and cried with joy. Tears streamed down my face and into my mask. How lucky I was! I had my camera... and I was alone with it (for the moment). This is my favorite shot ever.
This photo landed me a brief 15mins of fame over at National Geographic My Shot... here is the blog featuring it by one of their editors, Lauri Hafvenstein.
