Jamie Hayes (jchayes) I am a marine biologist and enthusiast of all things oceanic. Whether snorkeling, diving, surfing, or sailing, I'm always excited to get in the water. I learned to dive in the beautiful waters of a Fijian lagoon, on Gau Island. Since then, my diving has taken me from cenotes in the Mexican Riviera Maya to the frigid waters off Rhode Island. I've found that no matter where you dive, there exists a separate and fascinating universe just under the surface.
The main function of the scientific style is to describe, not to discuss. During this process, verbs take the passive position and the noun takes the active one. The result is a massive number of verbs in the lexicon, with a half-empty semantics. A common example of this is the verb "expresses," which is no longer used by itself. Instead, the word is paired with a noun.
