Advice for diving Gili Tepekong in Indonesia

Gili Tepekong is the name under which divers know this site, locals often call this big volcanic island "Gili Biaha". This often leads to confusion, as there is another island divers call Gili Biaha, while locals call it Pulau Kuan...

Gili Tepekong is a big volcanic island, offering three or four different dives ranging from coral gardens, massive boulders and bummies all the way to deep walls. Sharks can nearly be guaranteed and chances are high to see octopus, schools of sweetlips and snappers, fussiliers, jacks, tunas, barracudas and turtles. With a bit of luck, you will see mola molas (oceanic sunfish) during season (Jul - Nov) and we have even seen whale sharks, hammerhead sharks and tresher sharks, wobbegong sharks etc. here. But Gili Tepekong is also home to nudibranchs, clownfish, pygmy seahorses and many other creatures.

Make sure to only go with an experienced guide, as currents can occur and change quickly and there may be down currents, too.

Advice on Diving in Indonesia

...ola and Manta rays. On the east coast, you will find the USAT Liberty, probably the most popular dive site on Bali. In the quiet north-west, at Menjangan, there is some spectacular wall diving. The Gili Islands are easy to reach from Bali by boat and are very suitable for beginners, due to the mild conditions; not to mention some good deals on dive courses. Taking a flight to Manado, north Sulawesi is well worth the effort. Situated only a few hours away from each other, you will find two Indonesia diving highlights, Bunaken National park and Lembeh Strait. Bunaken diving is amazing for wal...
